Thing #12 - Final Reflection

Thing 12 - Final Reflection

Cool Tools for Schools helps me to expand my knowledge base - sometimes by offering new info and at other times by making me re examine and dig deeper something I am already familiar with. It forces me (in a positive way) to sit down and take time the to delve into professional material and gives me time to reflect on what I am doing and what new things I can be doing that will benefit my students & staff.

I like the flexibility of the course, I like that I can work on it anytime and anywhere. I do struggle though. It would be great if  I took the time, to respond to what others are doing and to read their blogs on a more consistent basis. When I did read blogs, it would give me an idea or send me to a thing I would not of considered otherwise. I know we are adults, and should not need to be micromanaged but I think it would of been beneficial if part of the class had us respond with one another or have a tweet session - so we can get together as a group to discuss what we are doing. I know how would one manage it? Well, it wouldn't have to be mandatory, but perhaps run like #2jennsbookclub? (I am really not trying to make more work for anyone but the possibilities? Maybe doing two chats per cycle?)

What is next for me? Well, there is so much information that has been important and relevant. I have been sharing resources with my staff. I have the When Adults Don't Read plastered all over our building. Our ELA staff is even relooking at independent reading in our building and making it part of the day - that is a big win for everyone!!! One of my favorite things was looking more deeply into social reading - love to read, love to share. I have been part of two online book clubs and started using goodreads again - it would be great to get students involved but many of my students aren't 13 yet.

The coding and reading things, are going to be central to the summer program I am working on with my principal - we were going to do a reading challenge and have thought - why stop there? Why exclude kids that may not read traditionally? We all know those kids, they say they don't read but they are building, creating, cooking, gaming, coding - all things that include literacy and  reading and following directions ...so, we are thinking of doing #MWsummergoals. Explore this summer. create, innovate and then share what you did via flipgrid - we will honor the students that participate with a fabulous purchase for the library (not sure what that will be yet)

I would do this again, but I would make sure I was more active in the class, taking the time to engage with participants and making time during my day to actually work on the things. I am thankful that Jim Belair gives us the chance to participant by taking care of the registration for us. Unfortunately, my district won't give me any PD credit for the course but at least they thank me for being a professional that exemplifies life long learning ;-)

Thank you!
